Natural Ingredients We Love for Sensitive Skin

When you have sensitive skin, choosing skincare can feel a little overwhelming. There are so many products on the shelves, and ingredients that work beautifully for one person may not agree with another.
At Cullowheegee Farms, we believe skincare should be simple. That's why we formulate our handmade products with thoughtfully chosen ingredients from nature, focusing on nourishing oils, butters, oats, clays, botanicals, and other ingredients that have earned a place in our workshop over the years.
While everyone's skin is different, here are some of the natural ingredients we especially love when we're creating products for sensitive skin.
Oats
Oats are one of our favorite ingredients for gentle skincare.
Colloidal oats are finely ground oats that can help support the skin's moisture barrier while providing a soothing, comforting feel. They're especially popular in products formulated for dry or easily irritated skin. Organic old fashioned oats provide the same benefits but are chunkier and can help with a gentle exfoliation.
You'll find oats in some of our gentlest formulas, including our Lavender Oat Sage soap and Baby Squatch Bar. These are also two of the bars we often recommend when someone is looking for a particularly moisturizing soap. We even use colloidal oats in our Soothing Oat Dog Shampoo!
For us, oats are a wonderful example of how simple ingredients can make a big difference in a skincare routine.
Shea Butter
Raw, unrefined shea butter is another ingredient we love.
Shea butter is naturally rich and emollient, making it a beautiful addition to products designed to moisturize and soften dry skin. It helps give our soaps and body care products a creamy, nourishing quality.
We use raw, unrefined shea butter in many of our formulations because we love what it brings to the finished product without needing a long list of unnecessary ingredients.
Olive Oil
Olive oil has been a staple in traditional skincare for generations, and there's a reason we continue to love it.
It's naturally rich in fatty acids and contributes to a gentle, conditioning bar of soap. In our cold-process soaps, olive oil is one of the foundational oils in our recipes.
We don't formulate our soaps around harsh detergents or synthetic lathering agents. Instead, we let carefully selected plant oils do the work.
Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is another plant-based oil we reach for when we're looking to create a nourishing, skin-loving formula.
It's naturally rich and contributes conditioning properties to our handmade soap. We love incorporating it into our recipes because it complements other nourishing oils while helping create a bar that leaves skin feeling clean without that overly stripped feeling some people experience with conventional cleansers.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a hardworking ingredient in handmade soap.
It helps create the rich, bubbly lather that many people love about a good bar of soap. We use organic coconut oil in our formulations and balance it with other oils and butters to create a bar that cleanses while still feeling nourishing.
As with any ingredient, individual skin can react differently, so sensitive skin isn't about finding one "perfect" ingredient. It's about finding a formula that works well for you.
Honey
Honey has been used in traditional skincare for centuries, and we love it for its naturally rich, skin-loving qualities.
Our Turmeric & Honey soap is one of the options we recommend for people looking for an especially simple, gentle bar. We also make our Appalachian Honey Lip Balm with local honey. We even have a fall seasonal soap, Hot Toddy with local honey.
There's something special about using ingredients that have a connection to the place where we live, grow, and make our products.
Natural Clays
Clays are another favorite in our workshop, but we use them thoughtfully.
Different clays can contribute different qualities to a soap, including natural color and a silky feel. Unlike synthetic dyes and micas, our clays give some of our soaps their beautiful earthy colors straight from the earth.
For sensitive skin, we believe in keeping things balanced. A cleanser doesn't need to contain a long list of aggressive ingredients to be effective.
Botanicals
Some of our favorite ingredients begin with plants.
Botanicals allow us to incorporate the natural character of herbs, flowers, roots, and other plant materials into our products. We also love that they connect our products to the Appalachian landscape that surrounds us.
One example is our Jewelweed Soap for poison ivy, which is made using locally foraged jewelweed. We create a concentrated jewelweed tea for the water portion of the recipe and also infuse organic coconut oil with jewelweed.
It's skincare with a story — and a little bit of the mountains in every bar.
What We Leave Out Matters, Too
For us, sensitive-skin skincare isn't only about what we put into our products. It's also about what we choose not to use.
At Cullowheegee Farms, we don't use synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, or palm oil. We fragrance our products with pure essential oils when fragrance is appropriate for the formula, and we use natural clays, herbs, botanicals, and roots for color.
We also believe ingredient transparency matters. You should be able to look at your skincare and understand what you're putting on your body.
Our Favorite Gentle Options for Sensitive Skin
If you're looking for a gentle place to start, some of the Cullowheegee Farms products we often recommend include:
Lavender Oat Sage — A moisturizing soap bar featuring oats and a gentle, herbal scent.
Mountain Air — A gentle option for those who prefer a fresh, natural scent.
Reishi Mushroom Soap — Another favorite for sensitive skin.
Turmeric & Honey — An extra-gentle option without essential-oil fragrance.
Unscented Baby Squatch Bar — For those who prefer to skip fragrance altogether.
Remember, even natural ingredients can cause reactions in some people. "Natural" doesn't automatically mean "right for every person," especially when you're dealing with sensitive or reactive skin. If you know you react to a particular ingredient, always check the complete ingredient list before trying a new product.
Simple Ingredients. Thoughtful Formulas. Handmade in the Mountains.
We started Cullowheegee Farms because we wanted skincare made with ingredients we could understand and feel good about using ourselves.
Today, we still make our products the same way — thoughtfully, by hand, and with a deep appreciation for the plants, oils, butters, and natural ingredients that inspire us.
From our workshop in Tuckasegee, North Carolina, to The Alley in downtown Sylva, we're committed to creating natural skincare with ingredients chosen with intention.
Because sometimes, taking care of your skin really can be about getting back to the basics.
Nourished from nature. Handmade with intention.
