Natural Fall Skincare: How to Transition Your Routine for Cooler Weather

There’s something about the first cool mornings of fall that makes us want to slow down, pull on a cozy sweater, and spend a little more time outside.
But while we’re enjoying crisp mountain air, changing leaves, and cooler temperatures, our skin is noticing the change, too.
As humidity drops and we spend more time in cooler, drier air, skin can start feeling tight, dry, rough, or simply less comfortable. That makes fall the perfect time to take a look at your skincare routine and give your skin a little extra nourishment.
At Cullowheegee Farms, we keep fall skincare simple: gentle cleansing, light exfoliation, and plenty of moisture from naturally nourishing ingredients.
Here are a few simple ways to transition your routine for cooler weather.
1. Start With a Gentle, Nourishing Soap
One of the easiest places to start is with the soap you use every day.
Fall doesn't necessarily mean you need a completely different cleanser, but if your skin tends to feel tight or dry after washing, it may be time to reach for a more moisturizing bar.
Our handmade cold-process soaps are made with nourishing plant oils and butters, including olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil, and castor oil. We don't use synthetic lathering agents, synthetic dyes, or artificial fragrance oils.
For a gentle everyday option, Lavender Oat Sage is one of our favorites. The combination of nourishing oils and oats makes it a wonderful choice when your skin needs a little extra care.
Mountain Air is another beautiful option for fall. It provides a gentle cleanse while bringing a fresh, mountain-inspired feel to your daily routine.
And, of course, our Fall 2026 collection was made for this time of year.
Meet Our Fall Collection
Fire on the Mountain is back by popular demand, with a warm, woodsy blend of cedarwood, sandalwood, balsam fir, and frankincense essential oils. Its natural colors come from ingredients including annatto, Himalayan rhubarb root, and charcoal.
Last Light was inspired by those beautiful Appalachian sunsets as summer fades into fall. Annatto, rose clay, and natural indigo create its mountain-inspired colors, while rosemary, lemongrass, and cedarwood essential oils give it a fresh, earthy scent.
Hot Toddy is basically fall in a bar of soap. Local honey, red Moroccan clay, and cocoa create its beautiful swirls, while cinnamon, orange, patchouli, clove, and cedarwood essential oils bring all the cozy fall vibes.
Whether you choose a seasonal bar or one of your everyday favorites, the goal is the same: cleanse without leaving your skin feeling unnecessarily stripped.
2. Add Gentle Exfoliation
Fall is also a great time to gently remove the buildup of dry, flaky skin.
The key word here is gentle.
Over-exfoliating can leave skin feeling irritated and even drier, so you don't need to scrub aggressively to get smooth skin. Instead, choose a product that provides mild exfoliation and follow it with a nourishing moisturizer.
Some of our handmade soaps naturally provide gentle exfoliation through ingredients such as oats, seeds, or other botanicals.
Our Lavender Oat Sage soap, for example, contains oats that provide a gentle texture while bringing their naturally soothing qualities to the bar.
Think of exfoliation as a little reset — not a battle with your skin.
3. Don't Skip Moisturizer
This is probably the biggest change to make as the weather cools down.
If you tend to use a lightweight moisturizer during the summer, fall is a good time to reach for something richer and more nourishing.
Our body butters are made for exactly this kind of seasonal transition.
We make them with rich, plant-based ingredients including raw shea butter, organic coconut oil, beeswax, hempseed oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin E, and arrowroot. The result is a concentrated moisturizer that leaves skin feeling nourished without the heavy, greasy feeling you might expect from a traditional body butter.
Our current varieties include:
Lavender Sage — herbal, calming, and perfect for winding down at the end of the day.
Citrus Grove — bright and fresh when you aren't quite ready to let go of summer.
Unscented — a simple option for those who prefer their skincare without essential-oil fragrance.
Apply body butter after bathing or whenever your skin needs an extra dose of moisture. A little goes a long way because these are concentrated formulas.
4. Keep a Lotion Bar Handy
One of our favorite things about fall is being outside.
Hiking. Apple picking. Football games. Mountain Heritage Days. Long walks through the woods. Chasing the last bit of daylight.
And dry hands don't exactly make those adventures more enjoyable.
That's where our Mountain Glow Lotion Bar comes in.
It's a solid moisturizer that melts slightly with the warmth of your skin, allowing you to apply nourishing oils and butters exactly where you need them.
And one of the best parts? It's incredibly easy to pack.
Toss it into your purse, backpack, travel bag, desk drawer, or car. There's no bottle to leak and no liquid to worry about.
It's especially handy for dry hands, elbows, knees, heels, and other spots that tend to need extra attention when the weather turns cooler.
5. Give Your Face Some Extra Attention
Your face is exposed to the elements every day, so don't forget to adjust your facial skincare routine, too.
Cooler temperatures, wind, indoor heat, and changes in humidity can all leave skin feeling different than it did during the summer.
Keep your routine simple:
Cleanse gently.
Moisturize regularly.
Avoid over-exfoliating.
Pay attention to how your skin feels and adjust accordingly. Our Blue Ridge Beauty Rejuvenating Facial Serum is our go-to facial moisturizer that is both light-weight and deeply nourishing.
If your skin tends to be sensitive, this is also a good time to be especially mindful of introducing too many new products at once. Simple routines can make it easier to figure out what works for your skin.
6. Don't Forget Your Lips
Fall weather can be rough on lips, especially when you're spending more time outdoors.
Keep a good lip balm nearby and apply it regularly.
Our Appalachian Honey Lip Balm has been one of our staple recipes since 2018. It's made with local honey and peppermint essential oil and is small enough to keep with you wherever the day takes you.
Because fall adventures are better when your lips aren't cracked and uncomfortable.
7. Moisturize While Your Skin Is Still Damp
Here's a simple trick that can make a big difference:
After bathing, gently pat your skin dry instead of completely drying it out, then apply your body butter or lotion bar while your skin still has a little moisture.
This can help your moisturizer spread easily and leave your skin feeling soft and nourished.
You don't need a complicated 10-step routine. Sometimes it's just about making a few small changes and being consistent.
Keep Fall Skincare Simple
One of the things we love most about natural skincare is that it doesn't have to be complicated.
You don't need a bathroom cabinet overflowing with products to take good care of your skin.
Start with a gentle handmade soap.
Add gentle exfoliation when your skin needs it.
Reach for a richer moisturizer as the weather cools.
Keep a lotion bar nearby for those dry spots.
And listen to your skin.
At Cullowheegee Farms, we make our products with ingredients we understand and feel good about using ourselves. Plant-based oils and butters, natural clays, oats, botanicals, and essential oils come together in simple formulas designed with intention.
And because we make everything by hand here in the mountains of Western North Carolina, our approach to skincare is pretty much the same as our approach to fall itself:
Slow down.
Keep it simple.
Get outside.
And enjoy the season.
